Video poker is the casino game that rewards people who actually read the screen. Unlike most slots, the pay table is right there before you play, and the cards you choose to hold change your long-run return. Kaya kung marunong kang pumili ng tamang machine at tamang hold, video poker can be one of the lowest-edge games online.
Pero hindi ibig sabihin na madali kang mananalo. This guide explains how real-money video poker works, how to tell a good pay table from a bad one in ten seconds, what each version costs you per hour in pesos, how rare a royal flush really is, the handful of hold rules that matter most, and where Filipino players can play with crypto. If you're comparing it to poker against other players, see our online poker Philippines real money guide instead — that's a different game.

What video poker is (and isn't)
Video poker is a single-player machine game based on five-card draw. You place a bet, the game deals five cards from a freshly shuffled 52-card deck (in standard versions), you choose which cards to hold, and the discarded cards are replaced. Your final five-card hand is paid according to a fixed pay table. There's no dealer to beat and no other players at the table. You're playing against the pay table.
That makes it very different from:
- Table poker (Texas Hold'em, Omaha): you play against other people, and the house takes a rake. Skill there is about reading opponents.
- Slots: you press spin and the outcome is decided; no decisions after the spin, and the return usually isn't shown on screen.
- Casino Hold'em / Caribbean Stud: table games against the dealer's hand.
In video poker, the skill is simple to describe and tricky to master: choose the right game, then make the mathematically best hold on every hand.
How to read a Jacks or Better pay table
Jacks or Better is the classic version and the one to learn first. You need at least a pair of jacks to get paid. Here's the typical pay table per coin bet, with the two rows that casinos change most often:
| Hand | Pays per coin (5-coin max bet) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Royal flush | 800 | Usually only at max coins; less at lower coin counts |
| Straight flush | 50 | |
| Four of a kind | 25 | |
| Full house | 9, 8, 7 or 6 | The first number in "9/6" |
| Flush | 6 or 5 | The second number in "9/6" |
| Straight | 4 | |
| Three of a kind | 3 | |
| Two pair | 2 | |
| Jacks or better | 1 | A pair of J, Q, K or A; you get your bet back |
When video poker players say "9/6" or "8/5", they're naming the full house and flush payouts. Those two little numbers swing the game's return by several percentage points.
Pay table returns: why "9/6" matters so much
Here are the long-run returns for common Jacks or Better pay tables with perfect strategy, as published by the Wizard of Odds (a widely cited video poker maths reference):
| Pay table (FH/Flush) | Return, perfect play | House edge | Cost per ₱10,000 wagered |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9/6 ("full pay") | 99.54% | 0.46% | about ₱46 |
| 9/5 | 98.45% | 1.55% | about ₱155 |
| 8/6 | 98.39% | 1.61% | about ₱161 |
| 8/5 | 97.30% | 2.70% | about ₱270 |
| 7/5 | 96.15% | 3.85% | about ₱385 |
| 6/5 | 95.00% | 5.00% | about ₱500 |
Same cards, same rules, same buttons — and the 6/5 machine costs you more than ten times as much as the 9/6 one over time. A perfect player on a 6/5 game loses faster than a decent player on a 9/6 game. This is the single most important lesson in video poker: check the full house and flush rows before you play a single hand.
What each version costs per hour, in pesos
Online video poker is quick. Below are average costs at a ₱25 bet per hand (for example 5 coins at ₱5), at three speeds: relaxed (300 hands an hour), steady (600) and fast (1,000). These assume perfect strategy; real-world mistakes cost extra.
| Pay table | 300 hands/hr | 600 hands/hr | 1,000 hands/hr |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9/6 | ₱34 | ₱68 | ₱114 |
| 9/5 | ₱116 | ₱233 | ₱388 |
| 8/5 | ₱203 | ₱405 | ₱675 |
| 7/5 | ₱289 | ₱578 | ₱963 |
| 6/5 | ₱375 | ₱751 | ₱1,251 |
These are long-run averages. In any single hour you can be well ahead or well behind — video poker swings, mostly because a big chunk of the return comes from rare hands like four of a kind and the royal flush.
How often each hand actually comes up
On 9/6 Jacks or Better with perfect strategy, final hands come up at roughly these rates (Wizard of Odds figures):
| Final hand | Chance per hand | About once every |
|---|---|---|
| Royal flush | 0.0025% | 40,391 hands |
| Straight flush | 0.0109% | 9,148 hands |
| Four of a kind | 0.236% | 423 hands |
| Full house | 1.15% | 87 hands |
| Flush | 1.10% | 91 hands |
| Straight | 1.12% | 89 hands |
| Three of a kind | 7.44% | 13 hands |
| Two pair | 12.93% | 8 hands |
| Jacks or better | 21.46% | 5 hands |
| Nothing | 54.54% | — |
So more than half of all hands lose outright, and about one in five just gives your bet back. The game feels "tight" because most of your money returns through a steady drip of small pays plus the occasional quad or royal.
The royal flush reality check
A royal flush is about 2% of the 9/6 game's total return, and it's the hand everybody chases. Using the once-every-40,391-hands rate, here's how likely you are to see at least one:
| Hands played | Chance of at least one royal |
|---|---|
| 1,000 | 2.4% |
| 5,000 | 11.6% |
| 10,000 | 21.9% |
| 40,391 | 63.2% |
| 100,000 | 91.6% |
At 600 hands an hour, the average gap between royals is about 67 hours of play. Most casual players will never hit one in a whole year of weekend sessions. That's fine — just don't build your plan around it.
Why you should (usually) bet max coins
On most machines, the royal flush pays 800 per coin only when you bet the maximum number of coins (usually five). Below max, it often pays about 250 per coin. On a 9/6 game, that difference is worth roughly 1.4 percentage points of return (a bit less once your strategy adjusts). That's a big chunk of a 0.46% edge game.
The practical rule: if max coins at your preferred coin size is too expensive, drop to a smaller coin size and play max coins, rather than playing fewer coins at a bigger size. Some online versions just use a single "bet" amount with the royal bonus built in — check the info panel.
The hold rules that matter most
Full perfect strategy for Jacks or Better has dozens of lines, but a handful of rules deliver most of the value. These come from standard published strategy for 9/6 Jacks or Better:
- Always keep a made pat hand (straight, flush, full house, four of a kind, straight flush) — except break a straight or flush if you have four to a royal flush.
- Four to a royal beats almost everything. Holding K-Q-J-10 of hearts and throwing away a made flush feels crazy, but it's correct.
- Keep a high pair (J, Q, K, A) by itself. Don't hold a "kicker" with it.
- Keep two pair and draw one card.
- A high pair beats four to a flush.
- Four to a flush beats a low pair. (2s through 10s.)
- A low pair beats four to an open-ended straight.
- Three to a royal is strong. With nothing else, hold three suited royal cards over two high cards.
- With nothing at all, hold your high cards (J or higher), preferring suited ones; if you have none, draw five new cards.
The Wizard of Odds lists a simple strategy for 9/6 that returns about 99.46%, an intermediate one at about 99.52%, and full optimal play at 99.54%. In other words, a short, correct strategy gets you nearly all of the way. Many online video poker games also have an "auto-hold" or "hint" option; it can help you learn, but check what it actually recommends against a strategy card before trusting it.

Other video poker versions you might see
| Version | What's different | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Jacks or Better | Classic; pair of jacks minimum | Full house / flush payouts (9/6 best) |
| Bonus Poker | Extra pay for certain four of a kinds | Lower two-pair pay often offsets the bonuses |
| Double Bonus / Double Double Bonus | Big four-of-a-kind bonuses; two pair often pays only 1 | Very swingy; needs a bigger bankroll |
| Deuces Wild | All 2s are wild; minimum hand is three of a kind | Completely different strategy and pay table |
| Joker Poker | A joker is added as a wild card | Pay tables vary a lot |
| Multi-hand (3, 10, 50, 100 play) | Same hold applied to several hands | Cost per round multiplies quickly |
Don't assume one version's strategy works on another. A hold that's correct in Jacks or Better can be a mistake in Deuces Wild or Double Double Bonus. If you're just starting out, stick with Jacks or Better on the best pay table you can find.
Variance: why you'll still have bad nights
Even at 99.54%, video poker is not a "safe" game. The standard deviation per hand is around 4.4 bets on 9/6 Jacks or Better, which means short-term results move a lot. Because so much of the return is locked up in rare hands, a few hundred hands without a single four of a kind is common, and your balance slides during those stretches. Double Bonus-style games swing even harder.
Practical budgeting tip: for a single session of a few hundred hands, plan for a bankroll of at least 100–200 bets. At ₱25 a hand, that's ₱2,500–₱5,000. If that feels too much, lower the bet size rather than playing on a thinner budget.
Where to play video poker for real money with crypto
Our main crypto casino pick is Cloudbet. We haven't confirmed which video poker titles or pay tables are in Cloudbet's casino lobby right now, so the honest advice is: search the lobby for "video poker" or "Jacks or Better", open each game's info or help panel, and check the full house and flush payouts before you play. If a game doesn't show its pay table, skip it.
Facts that matter from Cloudbet's own help pages and terms:
- Crypto deposits: BTC, ETH, USDT (several networks, including Tron, BSC, Polygon and Solana), USDC, LTC, DOGE, XRP, SOL and more, with minimum deposits around US$1 or less depending on coin. See our USDT casino guide and wrong-network deposit guide.
- Welcome package: up to $2,500 over 30 days, activated by your first deposit, including casino rakeback of 10% of the house edge. On a 0.46% game, ₱100,000 wagered has an expected loss of about ₱460, so 10% rakeback returns only about ₱46, which shows how little edge a good video poker game leaves. Details in our casino rakeback explainer.
- Bonus wagering: Cloudbet's terms say slots and arcade games with RTP above 99.5% contribute only 10% toward bonus wagering, and other slots contribute by RTP. Check how a given video poker game is classified before relying on it to clear any wagering.
- Withdrawals: typically processed within 24 hours per Cloudbet's help article; minimums vary by coin, with the network fee shown before you confirm. See Cloudbet withdrawal time.
- Licensing: Cloudbet is licensed in Curaçao, not by PAGCOR. Philippine law treats online gambling not licensed by PAGCOR as illegal, so understand the risk before you play.
Slow down: speed is the hidden cost
Online video poker can deal a new hand the instant you tap "Deal", and some games offer turbo or auto-play modes. Faster play doesn't change the edge per hand, but it multiplies the number of hands, and that is what drives your hourly cost. Going from 300 to 1,000 hands an hour on an 8/5 game raises the expected cost at ₱25 a hand from about ₱203 to about ₱675. Fast play also leads to more holding mistakes, which quietly lower your return below the published figure. A slower pace, with a quick check of each hold, keeps both the cost and the error rate down.
A 10-second pay table check (do this every time)
- Open the game's pay table or info panel.
- Find the full house and flush payouts per coin at max bet.
- 9 and 6? Great. 9/5 or 8/6? Okay. 8/5? Expensive. 7/5 or 6/5? Look for something better.
- Check the royal flush pays the bonus (usually 800 per coin) at your bet level.
- Check the minimum hand (Jacks or Better vs Tens or Better vs three of a kind in Deuces Wild) so you know which strategy to use.
Example: two players, same budget (made-up)
Ana from Iloilo and Jun from Pampanga each bring ₱5,000 and play 600 hands at ₱25 a hand (₱15,000 wagered). Ana picks a 9/6 Jacks or Better game and follows a simple strategy card; her expected cost is about ₱81 (the simple strategy's 99.46% return; perfect play would be about ₱69). Jun picks a flashy 6/5 machine and plays "by feel", keeping kickers and breaking up high pairs to chase straights; his expected cost is ₱750 for the pay table alone, plus whatever his mistakes add. Neither result is guaranteed on the night, but over many nights Jun pays roughly ten times more for the same entertainment.
Common video poker mistakes
- Not looking at the pay table. This one mistake outweighs almost everything else.
- Holding a kicker with a high pair. It lowers your return.
- Keeping a made flush when you have four to a royal. Painful but wrong.
- Playing fewer than max coins on a large coin size, losing the royal bonus.
- Using the wrong strategy for the version. Deuces Wild and Double Double Bonus need their own strategy.
- Treating 99.54% as "basically free". At 1,000 hands an hour, even small edges add up, and variance can still wipe out a short session.
Is video poker better than slots or baccarat?
On a good pay table with correct play, video poker usually has a lower house edge than most slots, which often return somewhere in the mid-90s percent. Baccarat's banker bet has a house edge of about 1.06%, which is lower than poor video poker games but higher than full-pay 9/6. The real difference is control: in video poker your decisions and your choice of machine change the outcome; in slots and baccarat, they mostly don't. If you enjoy thinking through each hand, video poker is a good fit. If you just want to relax, slots or baccarat are simpler — just with less control over the edge.

Mga Madalas Itanong (FAQ)
Can you play video poker for real money in the Philippines?
Offshore crypto casinos such as Cloudbet offer casino games to Filipino players, but Cloudbet is Curaçao-licensed, not PAGCOR-licensed, and Philippine law treats unlicensed online gambling as illegal. Understand the risk first.
What is the best video poker pay table?
For Jacks or Better, 9/6 (9 for a full house, 6 for a flush) is the full-pay version, returning 99.54% with perfect strategy per the Wizard of Odds.
What does 9/6 mean in video poker?
It's shorthand for the full house and flush payouts per coin: 9 and 6. Lower numbers like 8/5 or 6/5 mean a lower return.
How often do you hit a royal flush in video poker?
About once every 40,391 hands on 9/6 Jacks or Better with perfect strategy.
Is video poker a skill game?
Partly. Your holds and machine choice change the long-run return, but the house still has an edge on most pay tables and results swing a lot.
Should I always bet max coins?
Usually, because the royal flush often pays 800 per coin only at max bet. If max is too expensive, use a smaller coin size instead.
Ano ang pinakamadaling video poker para sa beginner?
Jacks or Better.
Is video poker better than slots?
On a good pay table with correct play, video poker usually has a lower house edge than most slots. On bad pay tables, the gap shrinks.
Does Cloudbet have video poker?
We haven't confirmed current titles or pay tables. Search Cloudbet's casino lobby and check each game's info panel before playing.
How much bankroll do I need for video poker?
A common rule of thumb is at least 100 to 200 bets per session. At ₱25 a hand, that's about ₱2,500 to ₱5,000.
Is it better to play faster to hit a royal sooner?
No. Speed doesn't change the odds per hand; it only increases how much you wager per hour, so your expected loss grows with it.
Does using the hint button guarantee perfect play?
Not necessarily. Compare its suggestions with a published strategy for the exact version and pay table you're playing.
