When a PBA favourite is expected to win easily, betting it to simply win pays very little. The spread fixes that. It gives the underdog a head start in points, so both sides become roughly a coin flip and the question changes from "who wins?" to "by how much?"
This guide explains PBA spreads from scratch, with peso examples. For the wider picture of betting on the league, see our PBA betting guide.

The spread in one sentence
A spread adds or subtracts points from a team's final score for betting purposes only; whichever side is ahead after that adjustment wins the bet.
Reading a PBA spread line
A typical line looks like this:
| Team | Spread | Odds (decimal) |
|---|---|---|
| Team A | −5.5 | 1.91 |
| Team B | +5.5 | 1.91 |
- Team A −5.5 is the favourite. To win a bet on Team A, they must win the game by 6 or more points.
- Team B +5.5 is the underdog. A bet on Team B wins if they win outright or lose by 5 points or fewer.
- 1.91 is the price. A ₱100 winning bet returns ₱191 total, which is ₱91 profit.
You'll also see the spread called a handicap, line or points spread. In Taglish, bettors often just say "may patong" or "plus/minus." It's the same thing.
How a spread bet is settled
Take the final score, apply the spread to the team you bet on, and compare.
| Final score | Team A −5.5 | Team B +5.5 |
|---|---|---|
| A 98, B 90 (A by 8) | Wins (98 − 5.5 = 92.5 vs 90) | Loses |
| A 95, B 90 (A by 5) | Loses (95 − 5.5 = 89.5 vs 90) | Wins |
| A 88, B 91 (B by 3) | Loses | Wins |
| A 102, B 96 (A by 6) | Wins | Loses |
Notice that Team A can win the game and still lose your bet. That's the whole point of the spread.
Half-points and pushes
Spreads ending in .5 can't tie. Whole-number spreads can. If Team A is −5 and wins by exactly 5, the bet is a push and your stake is returned. Bookmakers often use half-points on PBA games to avoid pushes, but you'll see whole numbers, especially on alternate lines.
Some books also offer quarter lines like −5.25, which are Asian handicaps that split your stake across −5 and −5.5. Our Asian handicap guide explains those.
What the price tells you
Spreads are designed to make both sides close to 50/50, so prices usually sit near 1.91 on each side. Convert the price to a break-even win rate with 1 ÷ odds:
| Price | Break-even |
|---|---|
| 1.87 | 53.5% |
| 1.91 | 52.4% |
| 1.95 | 51.3% |
| 2.00 | 50.0% |
At 1.91 you need to win more than 52.4% of your spread bets just to break even. That small extra above 50% is the bookmaker's margin. Getting 1.95 instead of 1.91 on the same line lowers your break-even by more than a percentage point, which adds up over a season.
Why PBA bettors like spreads
- Short favourites become playable. A strong team might be 1.25 to win outright. On the spread, it's around 1.91 if you think they'll win big.
- Underdogs don't have to win. If you think a team will keep it close, +7.5 gives you a cushion.
- It matches how fans think. Most PBA conversations are about whether a team will "blow out" or "just survive" an opponent.
How bookmakers set PBA spreads
Oddsmakers start with team ratings, then adjust for injuries, import status, schedule, venue and expected betting money. The opening line is then shaped by bets. If lots of money comes in on Team A −5.5, the line may move to −6.5 to attract Team B bettors. Lines also jump when news breaks, such as a star guard ruled out or an import replaced.
In import conferences, spreads can move more because a reinforcement's health or fit has a big effect. In the all-Filipino Philippine Cup, depth and big-man matchups matter more.
Worked peso examples
Example 1: Backing the favourite
You bet ₱500 on Team A −7.5 at 1.91. Team A wins 101-90 (by 11). 101 − 7.5 = 93.5, which beats 90. You win ₱455 profit and get ₱955 back.
Example 2: Backing the underdog
You bet ₱300 on Team B +4.5 at 1.95. Team B loses 85-88 (by 3). 85 + 4.5 = 89.5, which beats 88. You win ₱285 profit.
Example 3: The push
You bet ₱1,000 on Team A −6 at 1.91. Team A wins by exactly 6. Push: your ₱1,000 comes back, no profit, no loss.
Example 4: Overtime
You bet Team B +2.5. Regulation ends tied, and Team A wins by 4 in overtime. Most books include overtime in spread results, so 4 − 2.5 means Team B loses by 1.5 after the spread, and your bet loses. Always check your book's settlement rules.
Alternate spreads
Many sportsbooks offer alternate lines: you can take Team A −10.5 at a bigger price, or Team B +10.5 at a smaller one. These let you match your bet to a specific view, but every extra point bought or sold is priced with margin. A common mistake is taking a big underdog cushion at 1.30, which needs about 77% to break even. Only use alternates when you have a clear view about margin, such as a likely blowout.

Quarter and half spreads
You can also bet spreads on the first half, second half or individual quarters. First-half spreads are roughly half the full-game spread. They suit teams that start quickly or rely heavily on starters, and they avoid the randomness of late-game fouling and overtime. They don't include overtime, which matters for second-half bets.
Live spreads
During a game, the spread updates constantly. If Team A was −5.5 before tip-off but trails by 8 at halftime, the live spread might flip to Team B −2.5 for the rest of the game, or show a full-game line adjusted for the current score. Read carefully whether a live spread is for the whole game (including points already scored) or "rest of game." Our PBA live betting guide has more.
Spread betting tips for the PBA
- Build your own number first. Estimate the margin before looking at the line, then compare.
- Shop lines. −4.5 versus −5.5 changes outcomes in close games.
- Respect late fouling. Many PBA games end with intentional fouls and free throws, which can push a margin over or under a spread in the final minute.
- Watch import news closely in the Commissioner's and Governors' Cups.
- Keep units flat. Spreads are near coin flips; long losing runs happen even with good picks.

How big are typical PBA spreads?
Most PBA spreads fall somewhere between 1.5 and 10.5 points. Evenly matched teams sit close to pick'em (sometimes shown as 0 or "PK"), while a top seed against a struggling side late in the elimination round might be double digits. Spreads in the playoffs tend to be tighter because the teams left are stronger and closer in quality.
A quick rule of thumb many bettors use: each point of spread is worth roughly 3 percentage points of win probability near the middle of the range. So a team favoured by 3 points might win outright around 58% to 60% of the time, and a 7-point favourite somewhere around 70% to 75%. It's only approximate, but it helps you sense-check moneyline prices against the spread.
Converting between spread and moneyline
| Spread (favourite) | Rough win chance | Fair moneyline (decimal) |
|---|---|---|
| −1.5 | about 54% | about 1.85 |
| −3.5 | about 60% | about 1.67 |
| −5.5 | about 66% | about 1.52 |
| −7.5 | about 72% | about 1.39 |
| −10.5 | about 80% | about 1.25 |
If a book prices a −5.5 favourite at 1.70 on the moneyline, that looks generous compared with the table; if it's 1.35, the spread is probably the better way to back that team. Real prices include margin, so they'll be a little shorter than these fair figures.
Mistakes beginners make with spreads
- Reading the sign backwards. Minus is the favourite giving points; plus is the underdog getting them.
- Forgetting overtime counts. A late tie can turn a winning underdog spread into a loser.
- Chasing a "backdoor cover." A garbage-time basket that changes the spread result is pure luck, not a pattern.
- Betting both a spread and moneyline on the same team without realising how correlated the outcomes are.
Spread vs moneyline vs total
| Market | Question | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Spread | Who wins after the points adjustment? | You have a view on margin |
| Moneyline | Who wins the game? | You think an underdog can win outright |
| Total | Will combined points go over or under? | You have a view on pace or defence |
Taglish recap
Responsible betting
Spreads make games more interesting, not more predictable. Only adults 21 and over may bet in the Philippines, and PAGCOR rules bar students and government employees. Set a budget before the game and stick to it.
Mga Madalas Itanong (FAQ)
What does PK or pick'em mean on a PBA line?
It means no spread: the teams are seen as equal, so you're simply betting on who wins, usually at prices near 1.91 each side.
Can I bet a spread on a single quarter?
Yes, many books offer quarter and half spreads. They exclude overtime and carry more randomness, so keep stakes small.
Ano ang ibig sabihin ng −5.5 sa PBA?
Kailangang manalo ang team ng 6 puntos o higit pa para manalo ang taya mo.
What happens if the spread ends exactly on the number?
With whole-number spreads, it's a push and your stake is returned. Half-point spreads can't push.
Kasama ba ang overtime sa PBA spread?
Sa karamihan ng sportsbooks, oo, kasama ang overtime sa full-game spread. Hindi kasama sa quarter at half markets.
Is the spread or moneyline better for PBA favourites?
Usually the spread, because heavy favourites pay very little on the moneyline.
Why do PBA spreads move before the game?
News (injuries, imports, lineups) and betting money both move lines.
