RTP, or return to player, is the percentage of all money wagered on a slot that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins. A 96% RTP slot is built to return ₱96 for every ₱100 wagered, in the long run, across all players. The other ₱4 is the house edge.
That sounds simple, but it's one of the most misunderstood numbers in gambling. This page explains what RTP does and doesn't tell you, with a simulation to show it. For choosing games and sites, see our online slots Philippines guide.

RTP in one line
RTP = total paid out ÷ total wagered, measured over millions of spins.
A slot's RTP is set by its maths model: the reel strips or symbol weights, the paytable, and the bonus features. Game studios calculate it precisely and testing labs verify it. It's a property of the game's design, not something that changes based on how you play or what time it is.
How RTP is calculated: a toy example
Imagine a tiny slot where each spin costs ₱10 and has only three outcomes:
| Outcome | Chance | Pays | Contribution to RTP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big win | 1% | ₱200 (20×) | 1% × 20 = 20% |
| Small win | 38% | ₱20 (2×) | 38% × 2 = 76% |
| Nothing | 61% | ₱0 | 0% |
Add the contributions: 20% + 76% = 96% RTP. Real slots do the same thing with thousands of symbol combinations, free spins, multipliers and bonus rounds, but the principle is identical: every outcome's chance multiplied by its payout, summed up. Change one symbol on one reel and the RTP moves, which is how studios build several RTP versions of the same game.
What 96% does not mean
- It does not mean you get ₱96 back from ₱100. In a single session you might lose all ₱100 or win ₱5,000.
- It does not mean the slot "owes" you after a losing streak. Spins are independent.
- It does not mean 96% of spins win. Most slots win on 20% to 45% of spins, and many "wins" pay back less than your stake.
- It does not apply only to you. It's averaged across everyone, over the game's lifetime.
RTP, payout percentage and "theoretical return"
These terms usually mean the same thing. Land-based casinos often say "payout percentage," game rules may say "theoretical RTP" or "expected return," and some studios show a range when the figure depends on the bet level or a feature. "Actual" or "live" RTP figures shown by some sites are measured from recent spins and can swing far above or below the theoretical number in the short run; they say nothing about the next spin.
RTP vs house edge
They're two sides of the same number: house edge = 100% − RTP.
| RTP | House edge | Expected loss per ₱10,000 wagered |
|---|---|---|
| 98% | 2% | ₱200 |
| 96.5% | 3.5% | ₱350 |
| 96% | 4% | ₱400 |
| 94% | 6% | ₱600 |
| 92% | 8% | ₱800 |
| 88% | 12% | ₱1,200 |
Note "per ₱10,000 wagered," not deposited. If you deposit ₱1,000 and spin ₱10 a time, you can easily wager ₱10,000 in an hour by re-betting your wins. That's why small edges add up.
RTP vs volatility
RTP tells you the long-run average. Volatility (or variance) tells you how that average is delivered:
- Low volatility: frequent small wins, rare big ones. Your balance drifts slowly.
- High volatility: many dead spins, occasional large wins. Your balance swings hard.
Two slots can both be 96% and feel completely different. Studios usually list volatility on a scale or with labels like low, medium, high.
Simulation: two slots, same 96% RTP
We built two simple slot models, both exactly 96% RTP:
- Low-volatility slot: wins on 45% of spins; top prize 4.2× the bet.
- High-volatility slot: wins on about 22% of spins; top prize 1,800× the bet.
Then we ran 10,000 sessions of each at ₱10 per spin.
Short session: 200 spins (₱2,000 wagered)
| Low volatility | High volatility | |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions finishing ahead | 32% | 14% |
| Typical (median) result | −₱80 | −₱1,050 |
| Bad session (worst 10%) | −₱290 or worse | −₱1,400 or worse |
| Good session (best 10%) | +₱135 or better | +₱330 or better |
| Average result | −₱78 | −₱80 |
Long session: 2,000 spins (₱20,000 wagered)
| Low volatility | High volatility | |
|---|---|---|
| Sessions finishing ahead | 7% | 32% |
| Typical (median) result | −₱796 | −₱6,760 |
| Worst 10% | −₱1,476 or worse | −₱10,180 or worse |
| Best 10% | −₱109 or better | +₱12,250 or better |
| Average result | −₱794 | −₱951 |
Simulation by betgabay; simplified models, not real games. Averages converge to the 4% edge as samples grow; the high-volatility average is noisier because of rare 1,800× hits.
What the simulation teaches
- The average loss is the same, about 4% of what you wager, no matter the volatility.
- The typical experience is very different. On the high-volatility slot, the median player loses far more than the average, because a few big winners pull the average up.
- Over long play, low volatility almost guarantees a small loss; high volatility gives a real shot at a big win but most players lose much more.
- RTP alone can't tell you what will happen tonight. Volatility and session length matter as much.
Hit rate (hit frequency)
Hit rate is the share of spins that return anything. A slot with a 30% hit rate pays something roughly every three spins, but many of those hits pay less than your bet: a "win" of ₱4 on a ₱10 spin is a loss of ₱6, even though the game celebrates it. Don't confuse frequent hits with being ahead.
Adjustable RTP: the same game, different numbers
Many studios release games with several RTP settings, for example 96%, 94%, 92% and lower, and the casino chooses which to offer. The game looks identical. This is why you should check the RTP shown inside the game at the casino you're using, not a number from a review site. A game advertised at 96.5% elsewhere might run at 94% at your casino.
How to check a slot's RTP
- Open the game.
- Tap the menu, "i," "?" or paytable icon.
- Look in the rules or game info for "RTP," "theoretical return" or "return to player."
- Note any separate figures, such as RTP with and without bonus buy, or jackpot contribution.
- If no RTP is shown at all, treat that as a warning sign.

RTP for features and bonus buys
Some slots list a different RTP for buying the bonus round directly. It can be slightly higher or lower than the base game. Bonus buys cost 50 to 100+ times your bet each, so even with a decent RTP, the volatility is extreme. Progressive jackpot slots often have lower base RTP because part of each bet feeds the jackpot; the published RTP may include the jackpot's contribution.
Typical RTP ranges
| Game type | Typical RTP |
|---|---|
| Online video slots from major studios | about 94% to 97% |
| Progressive jackpot slots | often lower, around 88% to 94% for the base game |
| Land-based slot machines | varies by venue and jurisdiction; often lower than online |
| European roulette (for comparison) | 97.3% |
| Blackjack with basic strategy (comparison) | about 99.5% |
Slots generally have a larger house edge than the best table games, which is worth knowing if you split your time between them.
Does RTP change during play?
On licensed, tested games, no. The maths model is fixed and certified; the casino can't nudge it up or down based on your results or time of day. What a casino can do is choose which RTP version to offer from the studio's options. Unlicensed games and apps carry no such guarantee, which is one more reason to play only on regulated or reputable sites.
How to use RTP when choosing slots
- Between similar games, prefer higher RTP; 96%+ is a good benchmark online.
- Match volatility to your budget: small bankroll and long session? Lower volatility.
- Decide your session length; the longer you play, the more RTP decides the outcome.
- Don't pick games based on "hot" or "due" claims; RTP doesn't respond to recent results.
RTP and bonus wagering: what clearing a bonus really costs
RTP lets you estimate the expected cost of a casino bonus. Expected loss while clearing = wagering requirement × house edge.
Example: a ₱1,000 bonus with 35× wagering means ₱35,000 must be wagered. On a 96% slot (4% edge), the expected loss is ₱35,000 × 4% = ₱1,400, more than the bonus itself. On a 97% slot, it's ₱1,050. On a 94% slot, ₱2,100. That's why the RTP of the games you clear a bonus on matters so much, and why many offers end up worth less than they look. Our bonus guides walk through this in more detail.
Who checks that RTP is real?
Independent testing labs examine a slot's maths and random number generator before it goes live in regulated markets, and studios publish the certified RTP in the game rules. Reputable studios submit games for testing in multiple jurisdictions. In the Philippines, PAGCOR-regulated venues and licensed online operators use tested games; offshore sites rely on their own licence's requirements and the studios' certifications. A game from a well-known studio, shown with its RTP in the rules, is far safer than an unbranded slot inside an app with no information at all.
A quick way to estimate a night's cost
Multiply your bet by your spins per hour by hours played, then by the house edge. ₱10 × 500 spins × 2 hours × 4% = ₱400. If that number is more than you're happy to spend on entertainment, lower the bet, slow down, or choose a higher-RTP game.
Common RTP myths
- "High RTP slots are easy to win." They lose slightly less on average, nothing more.
- "A slot that just paid big won't pay again soon." Every spin is independent.
- "Casinos tighten slots at night or on weekends." Not on certified online games.
- "RTP is calculated per session." It's over millions of spins.
Taglish recap
Playing slots with Cloudbet
