Asian handicap is the market many serious football bettors use instead of the classic 1X2. It removes the draw, keeps odds close to even, and lets you fine-tune risk with lines like -0.25 or +0.75. Once you understand the settlement rules, it becomes one of the most flexible tools in betting.
This page focuses on the settlement tables and how to choose a line. For a gentler introduction to handicaps in general, read ano ang handicap sa betting. For all odds formats, see betting odds explained.

Why "Asian" handicap?
The format developed in Asian betting markets, especially for football, as a way to turn uneven matches into two-way bets with near-equal prices. Instead of three outcomes (home, draw, away), there are only two sides. The draw is handled by the handicap itself, sometimes with a refund. It became popular worldwide because it offers lower margins on many matches and more precise control over risk.
The four types of line
| Line type | Examples | Possible outcomes |
|---|---|---|
| Level ball | 0 | Win, lose, or full refund on a draw |
| Half | -0.5, -1.5, +0.5 | Win or lose only |
| Whole | -1, -2, +1 | Win, lose, or full refund (push) |
| Quarter | -0.25, -0.75, -1.25, +0.25 | Win, lose, half-win or half-loss |
Quarter lines split your stake equally across the two nearest lines. For example, -0.75 is half on -0.5 and half on -1.

The plus side mirrors the minus side
If you back the underdog with the plus line, outcomes are the mirror image. For example, +0.75 on the underdog:
- Underdog wins or draws: win.
- Underdog loses by 1: the +0.5 half loses and the +1 half is refunded, so it's a half loss.
- Underdog loses by 2+: lose.
The easiest way to avoid confusion: split the quarter line into its two halves and settle each half separately. Every time.
Calculating returns on quarter lines
Bet ₱1,000 on Home -0.75 at 1.95.
- Home wins by 2+: both halves win. Return ₱1,950 (₱950 profit).
- Home wins by 1: ₱500 on -0.5 wins (₱975 back), ₱500 on -1 refunds (₱500 back). Return ₱1,475 (₱475 profit).
- Draw or away win: lose ₱1,000.
Bet ₱1,000 on Away +0.25 at 1.90.
- Away wins: both halves win. Return ₱1,900.
- Draw: ₱500 on 0 refunds, ₱500 on +0.5 wins (₱950). Return ₱1,450.
- Home wins: lose ₱1,000.
Reading Asian handicap odds
Asian handicap prices are usually between 1.80 and 2.10 on each side. Many Asian sites quote them in Hong Kong format, which shows profit only: HK 0.95 equals decimal 1.95. If a line looks unusually short or long, books often move the handicap itself instead of the price, for example from -0.75 to -1. See decimal odds explained for format conversions.
Asian handicap vs 1X2 vs Draw No Bet
| Market | Equivalent AH line | Draw outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Home to win (1X2) | Home -0.5 | Lose |
| Draw No Bet (Home) | Home 0 | Refund |
| Double chance (Home or Draw) | Home +0.5 | Win |
Because Asian handicap markets are two-way and heavily traded, their margins are often lower than 1X2 markets on the same match, giving you a slightly better price for the same view.
How to choose a line
- Confident the favourite wins, unsure by how much: -0.25 or -0.5.
- Expect a comfortable win but want protection on a 1-goal win: -0.75 or -1.
- Like the underdog but fear a narrow loss: +0.75 or +1.
- Think it's close and want draw protection: 0 (level ball).

Asian handicap beyond football
The same logic applies elsewhere. Basketball spreads are essentially Asian handicaps with bigger numbers; see handicap sa basketball. Esports map handicaps and volleyball set handicaps follow the same win/lose/push principles. Asian totals (2.25, 2.75) apply quarter-line logic to goals; see ano ang over under.
Worked match examples
Example 1: The narrow favourite win
A Premier League match is priced Home -1 at 2.05 and Away +1 at 1.85. You back Home -1 with ₱600. Final score 2-1. Home wins by exactly one goal, so the bet is refunded and you get ₱600 back. Had you chosen Home -0.75, you'd have received a half win: ₱300 at 2.05 (₱615 returned) plus ₱300 refunded, for ₱915 total.
Example 2: The stubborn underdog
An underdog is +1.25 at 1.92. You stake ₱1,000. Final score 1-0 to the favourite. The underdog lost by 1, so the +1 half is refunded and the +1.5 half wins. Return: ₱500 + ₱960 = ₱1,460.
Example 3: The level-ball draw
You back Away 0 at 1.88 with ₱400. Final 1-1. Full refund of ₱400. With Away +0.25, you'd get a half win instead: ₱200 refunded plus ₱376 from the +0.5 half.
Why line choice matters over a season
Choosing between -0.5, -0.75 and -1 is really a choice about how you want to be paid in the most common close results. Football matches are often decided by a single goal, so the difference between a full win, a half win and a refund on a one-goal margin adds up across dozens of bets. A bettor who backs strong favourites might prefer -0.75 for the extra price while accepting a half win on narrow results. A more cautious bettor might choose -0.5 and give up some price for a clean win whenever the team wins at all. Neither is right for everyone; what matters is understanding the trade-off and choosing deliberately.
How bookmakers set Asian handicap lines
Bookmakers estimate the expected goal difference between two teams and choose a handicap that splits the market roughly evenly, then adjust the price. If a favourite is expected to win by about 1.1 goals, the main line might be -1 or -1.25 with prices near even. As money comes in, the book either moves the price (1.95 to 1.88) or moves the line itself (-1 to -1.25). Watching how a line moves in the days before a match can tell you where informed money is going, though it doesn't guarantee anything about the result.
Live Asian handicap
In-play Asian handicap lines update as the match unfolds. Importantly, many books settle live Asian handicap bets only on goals scored after the bet is placed, treating the score at the time of the bet as 0-0. Always check this rule before betting live; misunderstanding it is one of the most common causes of confusion. See our live betting tips.
Asian handicap for Filipino football fans
Football isn't the biggest betting sport in the Philippines, but the Premier League, Champions League and international tournaments attract plenty of Filipino interest, often in late-night or early-morning kick-offs Manila time. Asian handicap is a natural fit for these games because so many top matches are mismatches on paper. If you're used to basketball spreads, think of AH as a spread with much smaller numbers and the extra twist of quarter lines. Start with half lines like -0.5 and +1.5 until settlement feels natural, then try quarter lines once you're comfortable splitting stakes in your head.
Common mistakes
- Treating -0.75 like -1. They differ on a 1-goal win.
- Forgetting extra time doesn't count. AH settles on 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
- Mixing up HK and decimal odds.
- Misreading the plus side. Settle each half separately.
- Chasing line moves without understanding why they happened.
Taglish recap
Ang pinakamadaling paraan: hatiin ang taya at i-settle ang bawat kalahati. Karaniwang mas mababa ang margin nito kaysa 1X2.
Responsible betting
Asian handicaps give fine control over risk, but they don't remove it. Use fixed stakes and deposit limits. If betting stops being fun, our responsible gambling page lists free help.
Mga Madalas Itanong (FAQ)
Is a half win good?
It means part of your stake won and part was refunded, so you profit, just less than a full win.
What is level ball?
A handicap of 0: your team must win, and a draw refunds your stake, the same as Draw No Bet.
Why do Asian handicap odds use Hong Kong format?
Many Asian books quote HK odds, which show profit only. Add 1 to convert to decimal.
Can Asian handicap be used in basketball?
Yes. Basketball spreads work on the same principle with bigger numbers.
Which Asian handicap line should beginners use?
Half lines like -0.5 or +1.5, since they have only win or lose outcomes.
Do live Asian handicap bets count goals already scored?
Often not. Many books settle live AH bets only on goals scored after the bet, treating the current score as 0-0. Check the rules.
What is Asian handicap?
A two-way football market that removes the draw by giving one team a goal handicap, with possible refunds or split settlements.
What does -0.75 Asian handicap mean?
Half your stake is on -0.5 and half on -1. A 1-goal win gives a half win; a 2+ goal win is a full win.
What does -0.25 mean?
Half on 0 and half on -0.5. A draw returns half your stake and loses the other half.
Does extra time count in Asian handicap?
No. It settles on 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
Is Asian handicap better than 1X2?
It often has lower margins and more flexibility, but it suits bettors who understand the settlement rules.
