The one rule: stake × odds = total return

Decimal odds tell you the total amount you get back for every ₱1 staked, including your original stake. So:

Profit is always stake × (odds - 1). That's the whole system. No plus signs, no minus signs, no fractions.

What decimal odds tell you about probability

Divide 1 by the odds to get the implied probability: 1 ÷ 1.75 = 0.571, or 57.1%. The lower the number, the more likely the bookmaker thinks the outcome is. Anything below 2.00 is considered "odds-on" (more likely than not), and anything above 2.00 is "odds-against." Exactly 2.00 is even money, a coin flip.

For a deeper look, including removing the bookmaker's margin and calculating expected value, read plus minus odds to probability; the maths applies equally to decimal odds.

Why both sides add up to more than 100%

Take a PBA game priced Team A 1.65, Team B 2.25. Implied: 60.6% + 44.4% = 105.0%. The extra 5% is the bookmaker's margin. If the market were perfectly fair, the prices would be roughly 1.73 and 2.36. That small difference on every bet is how sportsbooks profit over time. Comparing the total across books is a quick way to see which offers sharper prices: a market adding up to 103% is better for you than one adding up to 107%.

Decimal odds on different bet types

Moneyline / match winner

The simplest use. Each team or player has its own odds. In football, the 1X2 market adds a third price for the draw. See ano ang moneyline.

Handicap / spread

The line (like -5.5) sets the margin; the decimal odds (often 1.85–1.95) set the price. A ₱1,000 bet at 1.90 returns ₱1,900 if your side covers. See ano ang handicap sa betting.

Over/under

Same idea: a line (like 210.5) and a price for each side. See ano ang over under sa betting.

Props and specials

Player points, first scorer, correct score. Often longer odds, like 7.50 or 15.00, because the outcomes are less likely.

Parlays with decimal odds

This is where decimal odds really shine. To find parlay odds, simply multiply each leg:

Leg 1: 1.80 × Leg 2: 1.95 × Leg 3: 2.10 = 7.37. A ₱200 parlay returns ₱1,474 if all three win.

The same multiplication shows how the implied probability shrinks: 1 ÷ 7.37 = 13.6%. And because each leg includes margin, the true chance is lower still. Learn more in ano ang parlay.

Converting decimal odds to other formats

ToFormulaExample (decimal 2.50)Example (decimal 1.50)
American≥2.00: (d-1)×100 · <2.00: -100÷(d-1)+150-200
Hong Kongd - 11.500.50
Fractional(d-1) as a fraction3/21/2
Probability1 ÷ d40%66.7%

Hong Kong odds are common on Asian sites and show only the profit per unit, so HK 0.90 is the same as decimal 1.90.

Why decimal odds are popular in the Philippines

Most international sportsbooks serving Asia, including crypto books such as Cloudbet, default to decimal odds. They're easy to multiply for parlays, easy to compare across sites, and they show the total return directly, which matches how most Filipinos think about a bet: "Magkano ang babalik sa akin?" Many apps let you switch formats in settings if you prefer American or fractional.

Rounding and odds display

Decimal odds are usually shown with two decimal places. Behind the scenes, prices may be more precise, and your actual return can differ by a centavo or two due to rounding. On very short odds, like 1.01 to 1.05, small rounding differences can matter more in percentage terms. Some books also impose maximum payouts per bet, which can cap very large parlay returns regardless of the odds shown.

Live decimal odds

During a game, decimal odds update constantly. A favourite at 1.40 pre-game might drift to 2.30 after falling behind, then shorten again during a comeback. Bet slips may show a warning if odds change before you confirm; many apps let you choose whether to accept higher odds automatically, any odds change, or none. Set this carefully so you don't accept a worse price without noticing. Our live betting tips page covers in-play strategy.

Finding value with decimal odds

A bet has value when the odds are higher than the true probability justifies. Quick check: multiply your estimated probability by the odds. If the result is above 1, the bet is positive expected value.

This one multiplication is the most useful habit a bettor can build.

Worked examples from popular Filipino betting sports

PBA

Team A 1.55, Team B 2.45. ₱1,000 on Team B returns ₱2,450 if they win.

NBA spread

Team C -6.5 at 1.92. ₱500 returns ₱960 on a cover.

Boxing

Fighter X 1.30, Fighter Y 3.60, Draw 21.00. ₱300 on Y returns ₱1,080. ₱100 on the draw returns ₱2,100. See boxing draw odds meaning.

MLBB

Team Blue 1.45, Team Red 2.70 in a Bo3. ₱400 on Red returns ₱1,080.

Football

Home 2.20, Draw 3.30, Away 3.40. ₱200 on the draw returns ₱660.

A bet slip walkthrough

Let's place a single bet step by step. You open your sportsbook, tap a PBA game, and choose Team B at 2.45. The bet slip opens and shows the selection, the market ("Match Winner"), and the odds. You type ₱400 as your stake. The slip immediately shows "Potential return: ₱980." That figure is 400 × 2.45, and it includes your ₱400. If you add a second selection, the slip may switch to a parlay ("Multiple" or "Accumulator") and multiply the odds automatically. Before confirming, check three things: the correct team, the correct market, and the stake. Then confirm. Your bet now appears under "Open bets" with the odds locked at 2.45, even if the price changes afterwards.

Minimum odds for bonuses and promotions

Many sportsbook bonuses come with a minimum odds rule for wagering, such as 1.50 or 1.80. That means bets at shorter odds won't count towards clearing the bonus. Free bets often return only the profit, not the free stake, so a ₱500 free bet at 3.00 returns ₱1,000 rather than ₱1,500. Reading these rules in decimal terms makes it easier to plan which bets to use. Our wagering requirements guide explains the details.

Odds boosts and enhanced prices

Books sometimes advertise "boosted" odds, for example a team's price raised from 2.10 to 2.50 for a single game. To judge a boost, convert both prices to implied probability: 2.10 is 47.6% and 2.50 is 40.0%. If you believe the true chance is close to the original price, the boosted price offers real value. Boosts usually come with low maximum stakes, so they're nice extras rather than a strategy, but decimal odds make them easy to evaluate in seconds.

How voids, pushes and dead heats are settled

When a bet is voided or pushes, it's settled at odds of 1.00, meaning you simply get your stake back. In a parlay, a voided leg counts as 1.00, so the parlay continues at the reduced combined odds. A dead heat, common in golf or racing "top finisher" markets, splits the stake: if two players tie for a position you backed at 6.00, half your stake might be paid at 6.00 and half lost. Knowing these rules prevents surprises when results come in. See void bet meaning.

Cash out values in decimal terms

Cash out offers are based on the current odds of your bet. If you bet ₱500 on a team at 2.40 and it's now trading at 1.50 in-play, a fair cash out would be about 500 × 2.40 ÷ 1.50 = ₱800. Books usually offer slightly less to include their margin. Doing this quick calculation tells you whether the offer is reasonable. Our cash out betting meaning page has more examples.

Line shopping: why two decimal places matter

Imagine 200 bets a season at ₱500 each, with a 52% win rate. At an average price of 1.90, you'd return 104 × ₱950 = ₱98,800 on ₱100,000 staked, a loss of ₱1,200. At 1.95, the same results return 104 × ₱975 = ₱101,400, a profit of ₱1,400. The only difference is five hundredths in average odds. That's why experienced bettors compare prices between books before every bet. It's the easiest edge available, and it requires no extra analysis.

Break-even win rates at common decimal prices

Your break-even win rate is simply 1 divided by the odds. At 1.50, you need to win 66.7% of bets; at 1.80, 55.6%; at 1.91, 52.4%; at 2.00, exactly half; at 2.50, 40%; and at 4.00, a quarter. Keeping these numbers in mind helps you avoid a common trap: betting heavy favourites at prices like 1.20, where you'd need to win more than 83% of the time just to stay level. Ask yourself honestly whether you can hit that rate on that type of bet.

Where decimal odds came from

Decimal odds are sometimes called "European odds" because they became standard across continental Europe and later Australia and Asia. As online betting grew, they spread further because they're intuitive for multiplying parlays and work neatly in software. The UK traditionally used fractional odds, and the US uses American odds, but most international betting sites now offer all three, with decimal as the default for players in Asia.

Decimal odds and bankroll planning

Decimal odds make it easy to plan stakes. A common approach is flat staking: risk the same small percentage of your betting bankroll on every bet, such as 1 to 2 percent. With a ₱10,000 bankroll, that's ₱100 to ₱200 per bet regardless of the odds. Some bettors scale stakes slightly by price, risking less on long odds like 4.00 and more on near-even prices like 1.95, because long-odds bets produce bigger swings. Whatever method you choose, write it down before you start and stick to it. Changing stakes based on emotion, especially after a loss, is one of the quickest ways to burn through a bankroll.

How bookmakers arrive at a decimal price

A sportsbook first estimates the true chance of each outcome. Say it thinks Team A has a 60% chance. Fair decimal odds would be 1 ÷ 0.60 = 1.67. It then applies its margin, perhaps offering 1.60 instead. It does the same for Team B (40% → fair 2.50, offered at 2.35). As bets arrive and news breaks, traders adjust. Sharper books operate on thinner margins and move quickly on new information; softer books may offer bigger promotions but less competitive prices. Knowing this helps you understand why prices differ and why the same bet can be worth taking at one book and not another.

Decimal odds vs casino payouts

Casino games can be expressed in decimal terms too. A European roulette single-number bet pays 35 to 1, equivalent to decimal 36.00, while the true chance is 1 in 37, equivalent to fair odds of 37.00. A red/black bet pays even money, decimal 2.00, while the chance is 18 in 37, fair odds about 2.06. In both cases the payout is slightly below fair, which is the house edge. Thinking about casino games this way makes it clear why the house always wins in the long run, and why sports betting, where prices can occasionally be beaten, is a different kind of challenge.

Mental maths tricks for decimal odds

You'll rarely need a calculator. For odds near 2.00, think "double minus a bit": at 1.90, ₱500 returns just under ₱1,000 (₱950). For odds like 1.50, add half: ₱600 returns ₱900. For 3.00, triple: ₱200 returns ₱600. For awkward numbers like 2.35, split it: ₱400 × 2 = ₱800, plus ₱400 × 0.35 = ₱140, total ₱940. With a little practice, you'll know your potential return before the bet slip shows it, which also helps you spot typos in your stake before confirming.

Switching formats in your sportsbook

Most apps let you change the odds display under account or site settings. If you follow American tipsters, you can switch to American odds temporarily to compare, then switch back. Your bets and returns don't change; only the display does. It's worth checking that your format is set correctly after app updates, since a reset to a different format can cause confusion when placing bets quickly.

Common mistakes

  1. Confusing return with profit. At 1.80, ₱100 returns ₱180; profit is ₱80.
  2. Thinking 1.10 is "free money." It still loses roughly 1 time in 11 or more.
  3. Not comparing prices. 1.87 vs 1.95 is a big difference over time.
  4. Mixing HK and decimal. HK 0.85 is decimal 1.85, not 0.85.
  5. Accepting odds changes blindly on live bets.

Taglish recap
