This guide explains how NBA first-half markets work, how to judge a 1H price, and where bettors commonly go wrong. We don't post live odds. For the full NBA picture from the Philippines, see our NBA betting Philippines guide.

Ano ang first half market?
A first-half bet is settled on the score at halftime, after the first two quarters. The third and fourth quarters, and any overtime, don't matter. Most sportsbooks offer three main 1H markets for every NBA game:
| Market | What you bet on | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1H spread (handicap) | A team's halftime margin against a points line | Team A −3.5 means Team A must lead by 4 or more at halftime. |
| 1H total | Combined points of both teams at halftime, over or under a line | Over 114.5 wins if the halftime score totals 115 or more. |
| 1H moneyline | Which team leads at halftime | Two-way (tie pushes or loses depending on rules) or three-way with a tie option. |
Some books add team totals for the first half, race-to-points markets, and half-time/full-time doubles. These usually carry higher margins.
Bakit hindi kalahati lang ng full-game line
A common shortcut is to halve the full-game spread and total. It's a rough starting point, but books don't price halves that way, for a few reasons:
- Starters play more of the first half. Rotations are tighter in the first and second quarters than in a blowout fourth. A team whose starting five is much better than its bench may be relatively stronger in the first half.
- Fourth-quarter dynamics. Fouling to stop the clock, intentional free throws and garbage time all happen late. They affect full-game totals and spreads but not first halves.
- Home teams and early energy. Some analysts argue home teams start sharper; whatever the size of the effect, it's built into lines.
- Pace patterns. Scoring isn't evenly split. Many games have slightly different scoring in the second half because of fouls, bonus situations and late-game strategy.
So a full-game total of 228.5 doesn't automatically mean a 1H total of 114.25. The book might post 115.5 or 113.5 depending on the matchup. Compare the posted 1H number with half the full-game number: a meaningful difference tells you what the book expects about how the game will unfold.
Ang tie rule sa 1H moneyline
A full game can't end in a tie, because overtime decides it, but the score can be level at halftime, and it happens often enough to matter. How a book handles a halftime tie on a two-way 1H moneyline is critical:
- Two-way with push. If the half is tied, stakes are refunded.
- Three-way market. "Tie" is a separate outcome with a high price; if you backed either team and the half is tied, you lose.
Always read which version you're betting. A 1H moneyline that doesn't mention a tie may follow the book's general rules, which differ from site to site.
Paano suriin ang 1H price
Hakbang 1: Kalkulahin ang margin
For a two-way 1H spread at 1.90 and 1.90, implied chances add to 105.3 percent, so the margin is about 5.3 percent. First-half markets usually carry a little more margin than full-game lines at the same book. If the 1H margin is much bigger than the full-game margin, ask whether the half is worth betting at all.
Hakbang 2: Ikumpara sa full-game line
Take the full-game spread and total and compare them with the 1H versions. Suppose the full game is Team A −7 and the 1H is Team A −4. The book believes Team A is relatively stronger early, perhaps because of a strong starting five, since four points is more than half of seven. If you think Team A's bench is the real strength, the 1H line may be giving away value, or the book knows something about rotations you don't.
Hakbang 3: Tingnan ang lineup news
Because starters play most first-half minutes, injury news about a single starter affects the 1H line more, proportionally, than the full-game line. Check confirmed lineups, which come about 30 minutes before tip-off, in the morning in Manila.
Hakbang 4: Isipin ang pace
Two fast teams usually produce a high 1H total. But the first half is short enough that a few early fouls or a cold shooting stretch can swing the total by ten points. Totals in halves are noisier than full-game totals relative to the line.
Worked example
A hypothetical game: full-game spread Team A −6.5, full-game total 226.5. The first half is posted at Team A −3.5 (1.91 each side) and 1H total 114.5 (1.91 each side).
- Half of the full-game spread is 3.25, so −3.5 is very close. The book sees no unusual first-half edge for either side.
- Half of 226.5 is 113.25, but the 1H total is 114.5. The book expects slightly more scoring before halftime than after, perhaps because both teams play fast early or because their benches are poor offensively.
- The margin on each 1H market is about 4.7 percent.
Now suppose a key bench scorer for Team B is ruled out. That matters less for the first half than for the full game, because he plays fewer first-half minutes. If the full-game spread moves to −8 but the 1H spread stays at −3.5, the book is treating the absence correctly. If the 1H also jumps a full two points, it may be over-adjusting.
These are illustrations, not real lines.
Kailan may saysay ang first half betting
- When you have a view about starters, not benches. 1H markets isolate the part of the game where starting lineups dominate.
- When you want to avoid end-game randomness. No fouling at the end, no garbage time, no overtime.
- When back-to-backs and rest matter. Tired teams sometimes start slowly or fade late; first-half and second-half markets let you express that view.
- When you have limited time. In Manila, a first half usually ends roughly an hour after tip-off, so you know the result before mid-morning for East coast games.
Kailan hindi
- When you're just halving the full-game line and guessing.
- When the 1H margin is much higher than the full-game margin.
- When lineups aren't confirmed and a starter is questionable.
- When you're betting the first half to "recover" a full-game loss from the previous day.
Paano gumawa ng simpleng 1H projection
You don't need a model to sanity-check a first-half line. A simple approach many recreational bettors use:
- Find each team's average first-half points scored and allowed over a recent stretch, say the last 15 games. Many stats sites split by half.
- Average Team A's 1H points scored with Team B's 1H points allowed, and vice versa. Add the two to get a rough 1H total.
- The difference between the two numbers is a rough 1H margin.
- Adjust for confirmed absences among starters, rest days, and home court.
- Compare with the posted line. Small differences, a point or two, are within normal noise; only large ones deserve attention.
This won't beat the bookmaker's models, but it protects you from betting a line that's far from what both teams have actually been doing. Keep the sample recent: early-season numbers, rotations and paces change through the year.
1H team totals
Team totals let you bet on one team's first-half scoring, over or under a line. They're useful when you have a view about one side only, for example a team whose top scorer is out, without needing a view on the opponent. Margins on team totals are usually a bit higher than on main 1H markets, and limits may be lower. The same projection steps above apply, using just the one team's scored and the opponent's allowed numbers.

Back-to-backs at first halves
Teams on the second night of a back-to-back, especially after travel, are often discussed as "slow starters" or "late faders." The evidence is mixed and the effect, where it exists, is widely known, so books already account for it. Where it can matter more is rotation: a coach might limit a star's first-half minutes on the second night. Check reports on minutes restrictions, which teams sometimes mention before games.
Half-time/full-time doubles
Some books offer a market combining the halftime leader and the full-game winner, such as "Team A / Team A" or "Team B / Team A." These pay more because you need both parts right, and the comeback combinations carry long prices. They also carry bigger margins than either single market. If you have a specific view, for instance that a strong team starts slowly but wins, it's an option, but compare the price with the two separate markets first.
Settlement rules na dapat mong malaman
- First-half bets settle on the halftime score. Overtime never counts.
- If a game is postponed or abandoned before halftime, books typically void 1H bets; check the specific rule.
- Half-point lines (like 3.5) can't push. Whole-number lines (like 3) can push, which refunds your stake.
- 1H team totals settle on the named team's points only.
First half vs first quarter
The first quarter is even more starter-heavy and even noisier: twelve minutes is a small sample, and a hot shooting stretch can decide it. First-half markets give a bit more time for quality to show while still avoiding late-game chaos. For the shorter market's details, our NBA first-quarter betting guide covers the 1Q tie rule and pricing.
| First quarter | First half | Full game | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minutes | 12 | 24 | 48 + OT |
| Starter influence | Highest | High | Mixed with bench and closing lineups |
| Randomness vs line | Highest | Medium | Lowest |
| Ties | Common | Fairly common | Decided by overtime |
| Typical margin | Higher | Slightly higher than full game | Lowest |
Second half at live betting sa halftime
Books post second-half lines at halftime, usually with a 15-minute window. The second-half line uses information from the first half, such as pace, foul trouble and injuries, but the book prices it quickly and adds margin. If you bet second halves, decide your rules before the game starts. For example: "I bet a second-half under only if the first half went well over the expected pace because of unusual free-throw volume." Without a rule, halftime bets tend to chase what just happened.
Mga karaniwang pagkakamali
- Halving the full-game line and calling it a "fair" 1H line.
- Ignoring the halftime tie rule on 1H moneylines.
- Betting 1H on star props or spreads before lineups are confirmed.
- Combining first-half and full-game bets on the same team in a parlay without realising how correlated they are.
- Treating a first-half loss as a reason to bet bigger on the second half.
