This guide explains the point spread in plain Taglish, from how to read it to the jargon that comes with it, like ATS, juice and line movement. For the bigger picture on odds formats, check betting odds explained.

Betting odds and results board.

Spread, sa madaling salita

The point spread is the number of points a sportsbook expects the favourite to win by. You bet on whether the favourite will win by more than that (the favourite "covers") or whether the underdog will lose by less or win outright (the underdog covers).

Halimbawa: Team A -7.5 / Team B +7.5. The book is saying Team A is about 7 to 8 points better today.

Spread vs handicap: pareho ba?

Basically, yes. "Spread" is the American term, common in basketball and American football. "Handicap" is used more in Asia and Europe, especially for football. Both add a number to a team's final score. The main differences are in naming and in the extra options, like Asian quarter lines. If you've read our handicap guide, you already know the mechanics.

How to read a spread line

A typical sportsbook display looks like this:

TeamSpreadDecimalAmerican
Team A-7.51.91-110
Team B+7.51.91-110

The number in the spread column is the points. The odds column shows the price you get for betting that side. -110 in American odds means you risk ₱110 to win ₱100, equal to 1.91 decimal. See plus minus odds explained if American odds confuse you.

Covering the spread: examples

With a whole-number spread like -7, a 7-point win is a push, and stakes are refunded.

Key jargon

TermMeaning
Favourite / chalkTeam with the minus spread
Underdog / dogTeam with the plus spread
CoverBeat the spread
ATS"Against the spread," e.g. a team's record ATS is 12-8
PushExact tie with the spread; refund
Juice / vigThe bookmaker's cut built into odds like -110
Pick'em (PK)Spread of 0; just pick the winner
Opening / closing lineFirst posted spread vs the final one before the game
HookThe half point, as in "-7 and a hook" = -7.5

Why the odds aren't 2.00: the juice

If both sides were priced at 2.00, the bookmaker would make no money on balanced action. Instead, both sides are priced around 1.91 (-110). If ₱1,100 is bet on each side, the book pays ₱2,100 to the winners and keeps ₱100. That cut, about 4.5%, is the vig. It means you need to win roughly 52.4% of spread bets at -110 just to break even, which is a useful number to remember.

ATS records: what they tell you

A team can have a great win-loss record but a poor ATS record, because the market already expects it to win big. ATS records show how teams perform versus expectations. A team that's 15-5 straight up but 8-12 ATS may be overrated by the market. Use ATS data as one input, not a magic signal; small samples are noisy.

Why spreads move

Getting a better number than the closing line, called beating the closing line, is one of the best signs you're betting well.

Spreads in different sports

Basketball (PBA, NBA, UAAP)

The most common place you'll see spreads. Lines from -1.5 to -15.5 are normal. See handicap sa basketball for local examples.

Football (soccer)

Usually called handicap or Asian handicap, with smaller numbers like -0.5, -1 or -1.25.

American football

Spreads are central, and "key numbers" like 3 and 7 matter because of how scoring works.

Boxing and MMA

Instead of point spreads, you'll see round betting and "fight to go the distance." Some books offer points handicaps on judges' scorecards. See boxing round betting explained.

Esports

Map handicaps (-1.5 maps) and kill or round spreads. See MLBB odds explained.

Spread betting tips para sa baguhan

  1. Know the 52.4% break-even at standard -110 odds.
  2. Shop for lines. A half point difference adds up over a season.
  3. Avoid betting on your favourite team if you can't be objective.
  4. Track every bet with the line you got and the closing line.
  5. Don't chase. Losing streaks are normal even at 55% win rates.
  6. Be careful with big spreads. Garbage time can change covers in blowouts.

A sample spread betting night

Here's how a disciplined bettor might approach an NBA morning in Manila. She checks injury reports the night before, notes three games where she has an opinion, and records the opening spreads. In the morning she rechecks the lines. One spread moved from -4.5 to -6.5 after a star was ruled out on the other team, so the value she saw is gone; she skips it. The second game hasn't moved, and she still likes the underdog +5.5, so she bets one unit. The third she decides to watch, not bet. That's the point: good spread betting is as much about the games you skip as the ones you play.

Paano mag-isip tungkol sa spread

A helpful mindset: the spread is the market's best guess, not the truth. Your job isn't to predict who wins, but to decide whether the market's guess is too high or too low. If you think Team A is 10 points better and the spread is -7.5, Team A looks good. If you think it's only 5 points better, the underdog looks better. When your estimate and the line are close, the honest answer is often "no bet." Over time, being selective matters more than being bold.

It also helps to think about how a game might be won. A team that relies on slow, defensive play tends to win by smaller margins, making big spreads risky to back. A fast, three-point-heavy team can blow opponents out but also has nights when shots don't fall. Matching playing style to the size of the spread is a skill that grows with experience.

Teasers and buying points

Some books let you "buy" half points, for example moving -7.5 to -7 for worse odds, or combine several spreads into a teaser where each line moves in your favour in exchange for parlay-style all-or-nothing risk. These features sound attractive, but they usually cost more than they give back. Buying points is mainly worth considering around especially common margins in sports like American football. For most Filipino bettors on basketball, the standard line is fine.

Spread and live betting

Live spreads reset as the game unfolds. If a favourite falls behind early, its live spread shrinks. This can create opportunities if you believe the early swing was random, such as a hot shooting quarter. But live lines move quickly and streams can lag, so set a clear plan and stake before tipping off rather than reacting emotionally to every run.

Spread vs moneyline vs total

Bet typeBest when…
SpreadYou have a view on the margin
MoneylineYou just want to pick the winner, especially in close games
Total (over/under)You have a view on pace and scoring

Read ano ang moneyline and ano ang over under to round out your basics.

Spread betting vs "financial spread betting"

In some countries, "spread betting" also refers to a financial product where you bet on price movements of stocks or indices, with gains and losses scaling by how far the price moves. That's completely different from sports point spreads and much riskier, because losses aren't capped at your stake. On sportsbooks, a spread bet risks only what you put on the slip.

Responsible betting

Even skilled spread bettors win only a little more than half their bets. Keep stakes small relative to your bankroll, use deposit limits, and take breaks. Free help is on our responsible gambling page.
