The short answer

The simplest and most regulated way is to buy USDT directly inside the GCash app through GCrypto, which runs on PDAX, a crypto exchange licensed by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. Alternatives include other BSP-licensed platforms such as Coins.ph and PDAX itself, funded from GCash or a bank. Peer-to-peer (P2P) trading on international exchanges is popular, but those exchanges are flagged or restricted by the Philippine SEC, and P2P carries scam and account-freeze risks.

Route 1: GCrypto inside GCash

GCrypto is GCash's built-in crypto feature. Fully verified GCash users can buy supported coins with their peso balance. For USDT, GCash's help pages list several networks for sending and receiving, including TRC20 (Tron) and ERC20 (Ethereum), plus others such as Avalanche, Celo, Kaia and TON.

Pros: no transfer out of GCash needed to buy, regulated provider, simple interface, receiving is free.

Cons: the price includes a spread, sending out has a fee that includes the network fee, and transfers can face security reviews that delay them, typically 60 to 120 minutes according to GCash's help pages. There's also a daily send limit of ₱1,000,000.

Route 2: Coins.ph

Coins.ph is a BSP-licensed crypto wallet and exchange. You can fund it with pesos through supported channels, then buy USDT on its trading interface or convert feature. If you're an active trader, an order-book interface can mean a tighter price than a simple "convert" button. Our Coins.ph guide covers sending from Coins.ph.

Pros: regulated, flexible networks, trading tools.

Cons: an extra step to move pesos from GCash, and cash-in channels and fees change; check current options in the app.

Route 3: PDAX

PDAX is also BSP-licensed and offers an exchange with peso funding. It's the engine behind GCrypto, but using PDAX directly can give access to order-book pricing. It suits people converting larger amounts who want to compare prices.

Route 4: Maya Crypto

If you also use Maya, its crypto feature works similarly to GCrypto. Note that some Maya help pages have mentioned temporary limits on receiving crypto during updates, so check the app. See our Maya to USDT guide.

Route 5: P2P on international exchanges

On P2P marketplaces, you pay another user via GCash and they release USDT to you on the exchange. It's widely discussed in Filipino crypto groups, but there are serious issues:

We don't recommend this route. If you're tempted by a slightly better rate, weigh it against these risks.

Cost comparison: converting ₱10,000

Exact prices change constantly, so here's a hypothetical illustration of how costs stack up. Assume a mid-market rate of ₱58 per USDT.

RouteAssumed spread/feeUSDT received (approx.)
Mid-market (no costs)0%172.4
In-app convert with 1.5% spread1.5%169.8
In-app convert with 3% spread3%167.2
Order book with 0.3% fee0.3% (+ cash-in cost)171.9

These spreads are examples, not quotes. To find your real cost, compare the USDT amount the app offers for your pesos against the mid-market rate on a reliable price site at the same moment. Our PHP to USDT rate guide explains how to read rates. Then add the network fee if you'll send the USDT elsewhere.

Choosing the network

If you're sending USDT to another wallet or a casino, the network must match on both sides. TRC20 is common because fees are usually low; ERC20 is widely supported but often pricier. Before sending, confirm the recipient supports the exact network and copy the address carefully. Sending on the wrong network can mean permanent loss. Our GCash USDT network guide lists what GCrypto supports, and our TRC20 guide walks through a transfer.

Common mistakes

Large amounts and verification

Sending crypto worth ₱50,000 or more from regulated Philippine wallets may require you to provide recipient details, in line with anti-money laundering travel rules. Keep your account fully verified and expect extra checks on big transfers. Split very large conversions only if it genuinely helps with price, not to avoid checks.

Using USDT for a crypto casino

Many Filipinos convert GCash to USDT to fund crypto casinos and sportsbooks. Cloudbet, for example, accepts USDT and is licensed in Curaçao; it is not licensed by PAGCOR, and there's no Philippine regulator to help with disputes. Only adults 21 and over should gamble, and PAGCOR rules bar students and government employees. Since August 2025, BSP has required e-wallets to remove in-app links to gambling sites, so GCash won't link to casinos directly.

USDT vs other coins

Why USDT and not Bitcoin? USDT is a stablecoin designed to track the US dollar, so the value of what you hold shouldn't swing much between buying and spending it. That matters if you're converting today and using the funds tomorrow. Bitcoin or Ethereum can move several percent in a day. USDC is another dollar stablecoin, but fewer Philippine apps and casinos support it on cheap networks, so USDT remains the default. Remember that a stablecoin still depends on its issuer, and the peso-dollar rate still moves, so your peso value can change even if the USDT amount doesn't.

When to convert

Spreads on in-app convert features tend to widen when markets are volatile, for example during big crypto price moves. If you're not in a hurry, check the offered amount at a couple of different times and compare against the mid-market rate. Don't try to time the peso-dollar exchange rate to the centavo; for most people the spread and fees matter far more than daily rate swings.

If your transfer gets stuck

Buying inside GCrypto is usually instant. Sending is where delays happen. If USDT doesn't arrive:

  1. Check the transaction status in GCrypto. "Under review" means a security check is running.
  2. If it shows completed, copy the transaction ID and look it up on the network's explorer (Tronscan for TRC20, Etherscan for ERC20).
  3. If the explorer shows confirmation but the recipient hasn't credited it, contact the recipient's support with the transaction ID.
  4. If nothing appears on the explorer after the review window, contact GCash support through the official in-app Help Center only.

Our GCash crypto not working guide covers more fixes.

Converting back to pesos

The reverse trip works the same way: receive USDT into GCrypto on a supported network, then sell for pesos, which land in your GCash balance. Receiving is free in GCrypto, but the sell price includes a spread. See our withdraw USDT to GCash guide for the full flow.

Watch out for "conversion agents"

Facebook groups and Telegram channels are full of people offering to "convert GCash to USDT" at a great rate. You send pesos to their personal GCash, they promise to send USDT. Sometimes it works; often the USDT never comes, or the pesos you received in a reverse deal turn out to be stolen and your account gets frozen. A licensed app's spread is the price of not dealing with that. If someone insists on moving the conversation to private chat or asks for your OTP, walk away.

Keep records

Save your buy confirmations, send receipts and transaction IDs. They help with disputes, support tickets and your own budgeting. If you're using USDT for gambling, a simple log of pesos in and pesos out tells you honestly how you're doing.

Safety checklist

  1. Use regulated platforms where possible.
  2. Check the total USDT you'll receive before confirming.
  3. Verify network and address twice.
  4. Send a small test first for new addresses.
  5. Keep screenshots and transaction IDs.
  6. Never share OTPs or passwords with "support" contacting you.
